John Bendor-Samuel
Biographical Information Sheet



Dr John Bendor-Samuel has served with Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of Linguistics since 1955. After serving as a translator in Peru, and Brazil, he visited Ghana in 1960 to initiate SIL's work in Africa. John Bendor- Samuel was the Africa Area Director of SIL from 1962 to 1983. Along with his responsibilities in Africa, he directed SIL's British Linguistic School for 25 years.

In 1984 he took up responsibility as the Chief Executive Officer of the Wycliffe Bible Translators International and the Summer Institute of Linguistics, giving leadership to the worldwide work of those organisations which are involved in more than 1,000 languages in over 50 countries.

At the conclusion of his term of office as Chief Executive Officer of the international organisations, John Bendor-Samuel was appointed Executive Director of WBT UK in 1992.

John Bendor-Samuel serves on the International Boards of WBT and SIL.

Throughout this period he has continued involvement in linguistic research in African languages. Since 1965 to the present day he is a member of the Council of the West Africa Linguistic Society. For the period 1982-94 he served as the Editor of the Journal of West African Languages. He also edited The Niger-Congo Languages, a state of the art handbook covering two-thirds of the languages spoken in Sub-Sahara Africa.
