SILK ROAD 2000

21 July 2000

It is a little foretaste of heaven! "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes...." (Revelation 7:9) Indeed, the gathering at the seminars on Friday morning was a glimpse of that great day in heaven when we will all gather before God's throne. Many ethnic groups and nationalities were present.

The 6,000-seat sports arena where the seminars are being held in the mornings was packed to capacity again on Friday. At the time of the foot-washing, several pastors representing various denominations and confessions went up to the platform. They each introduced themselves. We had evangelicals, charismatics, Pentecostals, missionaries and national pastors, but the crowning moment was when one young Russian Orthodox priest introduced himself as the leader of the Orthodox movement called "Vostok" (meaning "East") and the crowd roared in applause and cheers. He was paired with Pastor Vladimir Lyashevsky, the president of the Association of Religious Unions of Kazakstan. Mr. Lyashevsky is a charismatic/Pentecostal from a Ukrainian background, whose family were believers even during the time of the Soviet Union. They prayed over each other and washed each other's feet. Then Mr. Lyashevsky took the microphone and asked forgiveness on behalf of all Protestants for judging and rejecting the Orthodox believers, and the priest (I am not mentioning his name) took the microphone and declared that they want to be in unity with all the Body of Christ, because "that is what the world needs to see". What a breakthrough!

In the evening, we were hoping for a crowd of 10,000 believers, but the Lord had other plans. The stadium which seats 35,000 was more than half full, and 3,000 people were left standing outside unable to gain entrance. The 400-voice choir, 200 dancers in ethnic costumes, and 50 musicians were all in top form. The beautiful snow-capped Tien Shen Mountains formed the backdrop and about 8:00 pm the sun broke through the clouds, which had kept the day cool and pleasant. Perfect weather for a perfect evening (thank you for praying!). After a message by Luis Bush on repentance and spiritual breakthrough, eight designated pastors led the crowd of about 20,000 in repentance for the national sins of Kazakhstan and of the churches. They repented of abortion, murder, violence, corruption, indifference and apathy toward the poor and needy, alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution, pride, disunity, self-exaltation, divorce and domestic violence, ecological destruction of God's creation, and so on. I don't think there is a sin they didn't cover. The crowd prayed in agreement. Then after giving thanks to God for hearing our prayers, and healing our land and our society, we all closed with praises to the Lord. God is enthroned in the praises of His people.

The Almaty policemen (around 300 were on hand for crowd control, but there was nothing to control because everyone was under the control of the Holy Spirit!) were awed by the attitude of the people - all happy, rejoicing, hugging, and not a drop of alcohol around. People were saying "thank you" to them, and they were a little shocked.

All in all, the whole day was a resounding success. The seminars on medical, economic, and social issues are continuing as well. A medical mission to some nearby villages is in the works. Leaders are meeting to form a consensus on reaching the unreached and blessing Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Participants from Korea, USA, Canada, Europe and other areas are here along with believers from all over Central Asia. Every country in Central Asia is represented. We are believing God for the expansion of His gracious kingdom in the hearts of His people and in the places where they live.

Thank you for your prayer coverage of Silk Road 2000. The believers here are much encouraged to know that on every continent there are people focusing their prayers on Almaty, the Silk Road and, in particular, this conference.
